Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday attacked the incumbent Congress government in Rajasthan over the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, in Udaipur last year.
Kanhaiya Lal’s murder last year had been allegedly linked to his support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
“What kind of image of the brave land of Rajasthan has been presented by the Congress to the world? It is not possible to celebrate any festival in Rajasthan peacefully. No one knows when riots will break out or when a curfew will be imposed,” he said during his speech.
“Congress has created such an environment in Rajasthan where the common man is worried about life, the businessman is worried about business and the worker is worried about work. This anti-development environment has to be changed. Be it rioters or criminals, only a BJP government can fix it, and it has been our track record,” Modi said.
He also called the Congress government a “kursi bachao sarkar”. Invoking women’s safety, law and order and ‘paper leak mafia’, Modi said that the Ashok Gehlot-led government had done no work apart from saving his chair.
In his address, Modi highlighted the state’s troubling statistics, placing it at the top of the crime chart. He accused the government of mismanagement during its five-year rule, asserting that they had left Rajasthan in a state of turmoil.
Taking a dig at Gehlot, Modi said, “Here, Gehlot ji was just trying to save the CM chair, and half of Congress was busy in toppling his chair.” “Gehlot ji himself knows he is leaving the CM post, which is why he has already congratulated BJP. You see what he is saying these days: that once BJP forms government, his schemes should not be stopped,” he added.
Modi accused the Congress party of being united only in their efforts to exploit the state’s resources. “By deception, Congress managed to form a government but couldn’t run it,” he remarked.
“I feel pain when atrocities take place against daughters anywhere in the country but Congress has made this a tradition in Rajasthan… Every woman and daughter of Rajasthan is saying BJP will come to power and bring women security,” he said.
“Today, when it comes to crime, Rajasthan comes out on top,” Modi said, pointing out incidents of stone pelting, and crimes against Dalits and backward classes in the state. Emphasising the alarming rise in crimes against women, he said, “Maximum number of cases of crime against women are from Rajasthan… Is this why you voted for Congress?” He also cited recent incidents of violence against women in Bhilwara, Barmer etc.
“Rajasthan is saying with great confidence and trust – BJP will come, hooliganism will go, BJP will come and stop the riots, BJP will come and stop stone pelting, BJP will come and stop dishonesty, BJP will come, it will bring women security, BJP will come and bring employment, BJP will come and make Rajasthan prosperous. The message of the people of the state has reached the ears of Congress leaders,” the PM stated.
Modi also addressed the issue of paper leaks in the state, promising a thorough investigation and the strictest punishments for those responsible. He assured the youth that the government would take decisive action against the paper leak mafia.
Earlier in the day, the PM inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of multiple development projects worth Rs 7,000 crore in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh.
He inaugurated the Rs 4,500-crore Mehsana-Bathinda-Gurdaspur gas pipeline, the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s LPG plant in Abu Road, and several railway projects, tourism facilities and a permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Kota. He also opened a new four-lane road on the National Highway 12 in the Darah-Jhalawar-Teendhar section, constructed for Rs 1,480 crore.
