Voter turnout in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 held on Monday (May 20) in 49 constituencies across eight states and Union Territories was estimated at 60.48 per cent as of Tuesday (May 21). The final turnout figure is expected to be released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) by Friday (May 25).

After polling on Monday, the ECI said in a statement on Monday night that the approximate turnout was 60.09 per cent. But, the number was expected to rise as reports from all polling stations were verified and added.

As of Tuesday noon, the ECI’s Voter Turnout app, which shows real-time approximate trends, showed the turnout at 60.48 per cent — a little over 1 percentage point lower than the 2019 turnout in the same seats (61.82 per cent).

The trend of increased voting in Jammu and Kashmir continued on Monday, with Baramulla recording a nearly 24 percentage point increase from 34.3 per cent in 2019 to 58.17 per cent, as of Tuesday noon.
While the turnout has increased across Jammu and Kashmir so far, the boundaries of the constituencies have changed due to delimitation in 2022, making seat-wise comparison difficult.

Of the eight states and UTs in phase five, only Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh had increased turnout compared to 2019, according to Tuesday’s estimates. Turnout in West Bengal’s seven seats was the highest among the states and UTs, at 76.05 per cent, but they also saw a decrease of nearly four percentage points compared to 2019.

In Uttar Pradesh’s 14 seats that went to poll in phase five, the estimated turnout was 57.79 per cent, just under one percentage point of the 2019 turnout of 58.38 per cent. Amethi, where BJP MP Smriti Irani contested against Congress candidate K L Sharma, the turnout was 54.15 per cent; Raebareli, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi contested, the turnout was 57.85 per cent.

The polling for all 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra was completed during the fifth phase, which included 13 of the seats. Maharashtra had the lowest voter turnout among the eight states and UTs at 54.33 per cent, followed by Bihar with 54.85 per cent.
