With vacancies, Election Commission’s moment of reckoning: Former Election Commmissioner Ashok Lavasa writes
Since the introduction of The Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions Of Service And Term Of Office) Bill, 2023 in Parliament, I have been trying to understand the thought behind some of its provisions and the final amendments. There will be a distinctly different feel to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) rally at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground this Sunday, from where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee are all set to launch their Lok Sabha campaign. And the reason is not difficult to fathom. In 2019, neither was the ruling party in the state weighed down by as much anti-incumbency, nor were its mountain of woes this high, including cascading charges of corruption and the Sandeshkhali embarrassment. (Read More)
