Poonam Sinha, the SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate from Lucknow, on Thursday filed her nomination after a road show attended by her husband and actor-turned-politician, Shatrughan Sinha who is Congress candidate from Bihar’s Patna Sahib, sons Luv and Kush, and Samajwadi Party Kannauj candidate Dimple Yadav.

Poonam joined the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday and is pitted against BJP candidate and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Congress candidate Acharya Pramod Krishnam. Held by former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee for a long time, Lucknow remains a very crucial and prestigious constituency for the BJP.

Shatrughan said that he was not in Lucknow as a Congress leader but as a husband who has all right to be by the side of his wife. He also said that he would campaign for his wife, but not for any other non-Congress candidate. However, that did not stop from declaring Akhilesh as the “future of the country and youth icon”. He also raised slogans in favour of the SP and the BSP as his party candidate was filing his nomination at the collectorate.
“This march is for justice against injustice. This march is against their failed promises. This is against those who are running one man-show and two-man army in arrogance… those who promised employment and did not understand youth power. This march is against everything they did,” said Shatrughan.

“Ye march… Aur apna parivar apni patni, hamare bahu, hamare ghar ki beti Dimple… youth ka icon desh ka, aur wo hain aajka aur kal ka bhavishya, hamara apna Akhilesh Yadav, hamari adarniya behan Mayawati ji… hamare mitra aur dost sahyogi Ajit Singh ji. In sab ki marzi mansha se ye karyakram ho raha hai… (This program is with the agreement and intention of our family, daughter-in-law, our daughter Dimple, of country’s youth icon future, our own Akhilesh Yadav, sister Mayawati and our friend Ajit Singh…),” he said during the road show.

He also promised that Lucknow would now be his “second home” and he and his family would always be there for the people of Lucknow. He, however, did not not say anything on his own party candidate Krishnam, who also filed his nomination earlier in the day.

“I have sent my wife along with my children on their (alliance’s) request and invitation to do social service, to serve Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh. This is also to make this my second home… My family and I will be always with you… Samajwadi Party Zindabad. BSP Zindabad. Lucknow Zindabad. Uttar Pradesh Zindabad,” Shatrughan said.
While Poonam thanked Lucknow for all support, Dimple urged the people to choose a government that does what it says in its manifesto. She claimed that the SP and BSP were the governments that always fulfilled their electoral promises.

The road show along the 6-km stretch from SP headquarters to the collectorate had hundreds of alliance supporters holding flags of their respective parties. Poonam, Shatrughan, their sons Luv and Kush, and MP Dimple were on SP’s ‘Kaam bolta hai’ chariot.

When Poonam’s roadshow reached the collectorate, Congress supporters were already present there raising slogans in favour of their candidate, Pramod Krishnam.

Earlier in the day, Krishnam filed his nomination after offering prayers at Lucknow Mankamneshwar temple and the Hanuman Setu temple. Unlike BJP’s Rajnath Singh and SP’s Poonam Sinha, he filed his nomination without a roadshow and was followed by a few supporters. Talking to the media later in the day, Krishnam suggested that as Shatrughan has now fulfilled his “husband dharam”, he should also campaign for him in order to fulfill the “party dharam”.
Elections in Lucknow will be held in the fifth phase on May 6 and the results will be announced on May 23.
