There are 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka. In the 2014 general elections, BJP had won 25 seats, INC 1, JD(S) 1, and IND 1. BJP had registered a historic mandate in the last elections, winning 282 seats - an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. The Congress was reduced to its worst-ever tally, winning only 44 constituencies. Riding on Modi wave and a strong anti-incumbency against the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, the saffron party came back to power after 2004, when the party had faced a crushing defeat.
