The BJP has released five lists of candidates contesting the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017, which will be held in two-phases on December 9 and 14. The candidates in the running were announced in separate lists, following the party’s central election committee meeting, chaired by BJP president Amit Shah and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj among others.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will contest the polls from Rajkot West constituency, deputy CM Nitinbhai Patel will stand from Mehsana and state party president Jitubhai Vaghani from Bhavnagar West.

Till last week, sitting MLAs and hopefuls were on tenterhooks with no indication from the party leadership on who would be fielded in the polls. The party leadership, which has been discussing candidates for a month, has taken its time to ensure caste balancing in ticket distribution, BJP sources told The Indian Express.

Counting of votes for the 182-member Assembly will be held on December 18.
