Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday alleged that the BJP has created “ease of doing corruption in Gujarat” during its 22-year rule in the state. He also said the Congress cannot be blamed for indulging in caste-based politics and has been only giving platform to leaders of several “unsatisfied” communities agitating over various issues despite a long reign of the BJP.
“The issue on which the BJP government is patting its back is it has improved ease-of-doing business. But, I believe the BJP rule has in fact made ease-of-doing corruption. It has promoted contracts and business interests of a select few of its choice while it ruled at village, block, taluka, district and state levels over the last two decades,” said Pilot, president of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, while addressing a press conference in Rajkot.
His jibe at the BJP comes after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi persistently attacked the ruling party over business dealings of BJP national president Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah. A report by The Wire had claimed the turnover of Jay Shah’s firm increased 16,000 times over in the year following the BJP’s election to power at the Centre in 2014.
Pilot also refuted BJP’s charge that the Congress was instigating the Patidars to agitate for OBC quota. “Gujarat is lagging on every parameter — be it unemployment, issues of farmers, economical slow down and worries of the middle class, but it is being presented as if Gujarat model is the best model. Despite that, the BJP accuses the Congress of doing caste-based politics. This party has been ruling Gujarat for the last two decades.
If different communities are unsatisfied about their demands and are agitating and if the government tries to crush them by using police, beats up people, injures them, how the Congress is responsible for that? Our party is merely giving a platform of their leaders and making an honest effort as to how their demands, aspirations can be fulfilled in a legal framework,” he said.
Apparently referring to controversial videos targeting Patidar stir leader Hardik Patel, Pilot said politics of character assassination to which the BJP has resorted to was not a healthy tradition.
