After a decrease in turnout in the first phase of polling last week, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday held a meeting to discuss ways to mitigate the risks of heat wave conditions during the remaining six phases of voting in the Lok Sabha elections.

The voter turnout in the 102 Lok Sabha seats that went to polls in the first phase on April 19 decreased by around 4 per cent compared to the turnout in the same seats in 2019.

The Election Commission is yet to release the final turnout figures as of Monday. However, it was estimated to be around 66 per cent, compared to the 70 per cent witnessed last time.

In a post on X, the ECI said it was taking “proactive measures to mitigate heat wave impact” during the elections, in view of the forecast of above normal temperatures. The meeting was attended by officials from the Meteorological Department, the National Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“Meeting chaired by CEC Rajiv Kumar & ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu sets up task force to monitor heat wave impact during election period,” the EC said on X.

Polling for the next six phases is scheduled from Friday (April 26) till June 1, with the counting of votes set for June 4.
