You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is the latest news from the world of South Indian Cinema brought to you by The Indian Express.
"Let’s begin with the latest news. Actor Fahadh Faasil dropped a major reveal about Tamil star Vijay’s most-awaited movie, tentatively called Thalapathy 67. He confirmed the movie is part of director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cinematic universe, which is nicknamed LCU.

Fahadh Faasil played Amar in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s last film Vikram, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role. By the end of the movie, Amar renounced his loyalty to his government job as a seasoned spy and went rogue to avenge the murder of his wife.

At a recent press conference, Fahadh was asked whether there will be a standalone film revolving around Amar, to which he responded, “It’s too early to share about it. The announcement should come from the producers.” "
"Meanwhile, the trailer of the upcoming bi-lingual film Michael was released on Monday, Jan 23rd. Starring Sundeep Kishan in the titular role, the movie is written and directed by Ranjit Jeyakodi. It also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Gautham Menon in pivotal roles.

The trailer begins with a brief definition of widow spiders. Gautham’s character explains it’s a kind of species that kills the male spider soon after the mating session. Sundeep has undergone an impressive physical transformation to play a jacked-up Michael, who has a hunger for violence.

We get very little of Vijay Sethupathi in the trailer. The movie also stars Divyansha Kaushik, Varun Sandesh, Ayyappa Sharma, Anasuya, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. It’s due in cinemas on February 3."
"Moving on, Rishab Shetty is working on expanding the Kantara universe. However, the sequel is not going to be about the aftermath of Shiva’s disappearance at the end of the first part, but will instead deal with events of the past.

Hombale Films’ Vijay Kiragandur revealed that no expense will be spared in producing the ambitious follow-up. Hombale Films is planning to spend over Rs 3000 crore, over the next five years.

Kantara, made on a budget of Rs 16 core, earned more than Rs 400 crore from across the world. The film tells the story of a land acquisition problem in a tribal village that struck a chord across the nation. "
"Up next, Filmmaker Alphonse Puthren has lashed out at those who have been trolling him over his last film Gold. Puthren came under a lot of fire after its release, as the film was his much-awaited comeback after a gap of seven years and there were a lot of expectations from it.

Puthren also said, “I’m not like before. I’ll be true to myself first and then to my partner and my children and the people who really like me and stood beside me when I fell down. I will never forget the laugh on your faces when I fell down. No one falls on purpose. It happens by nature. So the same nature will protect me with support."""
"After making bad look good in the dark comedy Mukundan Unni Associates, Vineeth Sreenivasan is set to kick off 2023 with Thankam.

The trailer of Thankam suggested Vineeth is playing a character with grey shades. But Vineeth says his character Kannan is a victim of his circumstances.

When asked what the audience can expect from Thankam he said, ""Generally, with Bhavana Productions’ films, you have this feeling where you want to know what happens next and information is peeling in front of you bit by bit. That kind of storytelling is there in this film. There is also a certain kind of unpredictability. I believe it will be a very engaging film."""
"In other news, Telugu actor Sudheer Varma, who has been part of films like Neeku Naaku Dash Dash and Second Hand, passed away on Monday, Jan 23rd morning by suicide. As per reports, Sudheer Varma was found in critical condition by family members at his home in Hyderabad. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and was shifted to a private one on Friday, Jan 20th.

After being associated with theatre, Sudheer Varma entered the Telugu film industry in 2016 with Kundanapu Bomma. As news of his death hit social media, Sudhakar Komakula, his co-star from Kundanapu Bomma, and director Venky Kudumula took to Twitter to express their shock over his unfortunate death."
"Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya, which was released on Jan 13th, immediately took the lead at the box office over Veera Simha Reddy and has only moved ahead since then, leaving Veera Simha Reddy in the dust.

After earning close to Rs 132 crore, early estimates suggested that Waltair Veerayya collected more than Rs 10.40 crore on day 10, taking the total to more than Rs 142 crore. As per Sacnilk, the film will continue to move in a similar motion in the coming days.

On the other hand, Veera Simha Reddy saw a huge dip in collections. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned only Rs 1.95 crore, taking the total to Rs 92.6 crore. "
"Lastly, SS Rajamouli’s RRR continues to achieve new milestones in Japan. The film, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has emerged as a blockbuster in Japan, and more IMAX screens have been added, leading to a surge in admissions, according to a report in Variety. According to the news portal, the film collected $519,000 over the weekend taking its total to $5 million.

The historical epic has raced past Rajinikanth’s Muthu, which collected $3.07 million in 1998. Other high-grossing films in Japan include SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion, Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots, Sridevi’s English Vinglish, Akshay Kumar’s PadMan, Dangal, and Baahubali: The Beginning.

RRR has become a global phenomenon, praised by Western filmmakers, and won the Golden Globe for Best Song."
