You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Hollywood brought to you by The Indian Express.
“Let us begin today’s bulletin with news on “Avengers: Endgame”. It ended on a bittersweet note (well, more bitter for Tony Stark fans) as Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the universe. Endgame was touted to be Downey Jr’s last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though fans are hoping that there might be some miraculous reversal of sorts and that the character might return.
Recently, it was revealed that Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and starred as Happy Hogan in the films, really tried hard to save the character and even begged Endgame directors, Joe, and Anthony Russo to save him.

“Meanwhile, Judy Greer, Alison Pill and Alexander Skarsgard are set to star in Eric Larue, the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon. An official adaptation of a play of the same title from Brett Neveu that debuted at ‘A Red Orchid Theatre’ in Chicago in 2002, the film’s cast also includes Paul Sparks, Tracy Letts, Annie Parisse and Kate Arrington, reported Deadline.
Neveu is on board with the project as he is adapting his original play, which he wrote in response to the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. The story is about Janice, the mother of 17-year-old Eric, who shot and killed three of his classmates.”
“Moving on, Hollywood star Will Smith recently took to his Instagram handle to break the silence on his infamous Oscars slap. Smith said he’s “deeply remorseful” for slapping presenter Chris Rock after the latter made fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
Smith answered some questions that have been doing the rounds of the internet regarding his impending apology. The actor began by answering the question – “Why didn’t you apologize to Chris Rock in the acceptance speech?” In his reply, Smith said that he reached out to Rock, who wasn’t “ready to talk”. He added, “I will say to you, Chris, I apologise to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I am here whenever you are ready to talk.”

“In other news, Hollywood studio MGM is working on Drago, a spin-off to boxing drama movie ‘Creed’. According to Variety, the studio has hired Robert Lawton to write the screenplay. Drago will focus on Dolph Lundgren’s Russian boxer of the same name, which he portrayed in 1985’s ‘Rocky IV’, as well as his son Viktor Drago, who debuted in Creed II.
Creed series, led by Michael B Jordan, is itself a spin-off to Sylvester Stallone‘s iconic Rocky franchise. Lawton earlier penned a spec script ‘Becoming Rocky’, about the making of the first Rocky film. Though the studio didn’t move ahead with his film idea, it appointed Lawton to build out a backstory about Drago. ”
“Meanwhile, Netflix recently released the first trailer of its upcoming biopic of Marilyn Monroe titled ‘Blonde’. Starring Ana de Armas as the iconic star who was ‘watched by all and seen by none’, Blonde is directed by Andrew Dominik and is being touted as Netflix’s big Oscars play this year.
Shot in both black-and-white and colour, and in different aspect ratios, the film examines the real person behind Marilyn Monroe, the star. The two-minute trailer features several glimpses of Monroe’s glamorous life, and also her personal struggles with fame and addiction.
The film will be released on Netflix on September 28, after premiering in competition at the Venice International Film Festival.”
“In some exciting news, Jason Momoa revealed in an Instagram post that Ben Affleck will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was believed to have wrapped filming. He made the announcement after being ‘busted’ on set by a tour group that spotted the two actors together.
Momoa also shared a video of the tour group outside the trailer and attached photos of him and Affleck together. Affleck appeared to be in costume and makeup as Bruce Wayne. Momoa laughed while commenting, “Well, we tried to keep it a secret! That’s what happens, Warner Bros, when you walk out of the set and there are our fans…”

“Moving on, Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed last year’s Marvel hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been roped in by the studio to direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.

The announcement comes days after studio head Kevin Feige announced two new Avengers films, the other being Secret Wars, at the San Diego Comic-Con.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios will now look to add a writer to the project as meetings are currently underway. The film, a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster hit Avengers: Endgame, will focus on Kang, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new main villain to be played by Jonathan Majors.

“Lastly, the first teaser of ‘Oppenheimer’ is out. The teaser opens with a voice-over talking about the changing world, and how J. Robert Oppenheimer’s moment has finally arrived. We see visuals of sparks, fire, and a cloud of fire and smoke. Murphy plays the titular character in the Christopher Nolan film.
Another voice-over says, “You gave them the power to destroy themselves and made him the most important man who ever lived.” The footage of the film is monochromatic. The video ends with the line – ‘The man who moved the Earth’. Oppenheimer is a biopic of J Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project during World War II. The film releases in theatres on July 21, 2023.
