Trend-spotting: Should Breakdancing be part of the Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) recommendation to include Breakdancing, Skateboarding and Surfing in the 2023 Olympics has raised a lot of eyebrows and sparked many debates. Here, at the Indian Express sports desk, it has practically caused Gaurav Bhatt and his friend Mihir Vasavda to reconsider their friendship (Well, almost). They have been at each other’s throats ever since the announcement came through. One asks, ‘Should something like Breakdancing really be considered a ‘sport’? And be an Olympic event when sports like Squash and Chess aren’t?’ And the other replies, ‘Why not? You have sports like Equestrian and Tug-of-War. Atleast Breakdancing will be more entertaining.’

In this intensely polarizing episode, they are armed and ready, with Daksh Panwar as the mediator (though even he is biased), to debate the future of Olympics.
