Explained: The Caster Semenya controversy

On the 1st of May, something major happened in the world of sports. Something that is not only questioning the ethics but is also making people rethink the gender classification in sports. This because on Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided that the South African 800m Olympic champion Caster Semenya’s testosterone levels were so high, that they did not fall under the women’s category. They ruled that she should therefore use suppressants to reduce her naturally occurring testosterone levels in order to participate and be ‘fair’ to other women participants. In this episode, Daksh and Gaurav sit down with sports writer Nihal Koshie to try and understand the implications of this decision and the ramifications it can have for women in sports.
