The problem of Indian prisons being overcrowded is not new. But during the Covid-19 pandemic, when physical distancing is a must, this has led to a major crisis for those who are imprisoned. Despite interventions by the Supreme Court many prisons across the country continue to remain congested, and some have even become more overcrowded.
In this episode, Nikita Sonavane, lawyer and the co-founder of The Criminal Justice and Police Accountability Project (CPAProject) joins us to talk about why Indian prisons continue to remain overcrowded, and the conditions that prisoners find themselves in right now.
