India has shown a low increase in representation of women in state and national politics since the time of Independence. Given the substantial increase in the number of women in local and Panchayat roles, why does this trend not translate to more women MLAs and MPs? To discuss this issue we are joined by Tara Krishnaswamy, the co-convener of the India Women’s Caucus, a non partisan group of women working towards the objective of getting more women elected in the state and central government. Tara discusses why there is low representation of women in politics, tokenism versus empowerment and the socio-cultural impact of political representation.
