This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I’m Damini Jaiman. 

It’s the 12th of May and here are the headlines.

According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation today, the country’s retail inflation, which is measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose to an eight-year high of 7.79 per cent in the month of April. Separately, India’s factory output, measured in terms of Index of Industrial Production (IIP), witnessed a growth of 1.9 per cent in March. The retail inflation for the month of March was 6.95 per cent.

Meanwhile, today The Jharkhand government suspended mining secretary Pooja Singhal, a day after she was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with its probe into a money laundering case. Singhal was arrested in a case involving the alleged diversion of funds from the rural employment guarantee act, MGNREGA during her tenure as deputy commissioner in Khunti in 2009-2010. She was produced before a special court, which sent her to ED custody for five days.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) conducted an anti-encroachment drive in Amar Colony, East of Kailash and other adjoining areas in South Delhi Today, days after bulldozers reached the Shaheen Bagh area. AAP MLA   Khan was detained after clashes broke out during protests against the drive. 

Meanwhile, today, fragments of suspected debris from space fell in three locations in the Anand district of Gujarat. The district police called in experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory to begin a probe. 

A Delhi court today rejected the bail plea of National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) former managing director Chitra Ramkrishna and former group operating officer (GOO) Anand Subramanian in a 2018 case of bourse manipulation. Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal refused to grant bail to the two accused after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had opposed their bail claiming that they were involved in a serious offence affecting the integrity of the financial system.

Today, The Union Ministry of Law and Justice announced Rajiv Kumar, the current Election Commissioner, will take over as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) from May 15. Kumar will take charge from CEC Sushil Chandra, who is due to retire.
