Sonia Gandhi as interim president, NRC hearings and busting fake news on Whatsapp

On Saturday, the Congress Working Committee named Sonia Gandhi its new interim president. This comes 3 months after Rahul Gandhi quit as party chief and almost 20 months after Sonia Gandhi made way for him to lead the Congress party. Even though this time other potentials were reportedly in the running, the party failed to pick a non-Gandhi as a successor. In the first segment, Manoj CG, who reports on the Congress for the Indian Express, joins us to talk about the decision and what it means for the party. Next, after thousands of people in the state of Assam received “sudden” notices to appear for NRC hearings in far-off towns, Abhishek Saha, Indian Express’s North East correspondent talks about these notices and the problems that people are facing because of it. And last, Asad Rehman explains how the UP police has been busting fake news on Whatsapp groups with the help of volunteers and their own social media teams.
