Explained: EC’s crackdown on Yogi, Maya, Azam and Maneka

Yesterday, the Election Commission (EC) barred four politicians from campaigning for violating the Model Code of Conduct, days ahead of the second phase of the general elections. First it barred, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath from campaigning for three days and BSP chief Mayawati for two. And then later in the day it barred, Samajwadi party leader Azam Khan for three days and Union minister Maneka Gandhi for two.

In this episode we look at the basis on which the EC has barred them, the precedent for such actions by the poll watchdog and what stops the politicians from ignoring its orders. Ritika Chopra, who reports on the Election Commission for the Indian Express, joins us to answer these questions.
