Explained: Cricket Diplomacy and why Modi gifted a bat to Maldives

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the Maldives on his first foreign visit after being re-elected as Prime Minister. This visit was meant to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. During the visit, Modi also gifted Maldives President Ibrahim Solih a cricket bat signed by the Indian cricket team. This is all because President Solih wants to promote cricket in Maldives and wants India’s help in it. And this is being talked about in the context of ‘cricket diplomacy’. In this episode, Shubhajit Roy who reports on foreign affairs for the Indian Express, joins us to tell us about cricket diplomacy and instances in the past when India has used Cricket to its diplomatic advantage.
