Decoding the electoral bonds controversy

In his Budget 2017 speech, then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley discussed a way to cleanse the political system of black money and bring transparency to political funding- Electoral Bonds. In the months since, it became clear that electoral bonds would instead make the system more opaque. In the last week, we saw a series of investigations that exposed questionable methods used by the Center to push for the scheme. On this episode we look at the controversy around electoral bonds and transparency in political funding. Udit Misra, who writes for the Indian Express’ Explained page and has done a three part series on what RTIs on electoral bonds reveal, explains what electoral bonds are, what makes the system opaque and the many dangers that lie in that.
