Episode 746 February 18, 2020

CCTV footage from Jamia, children out of NRC, a lynching in Tamil Nadu

At 1.41 am on Sunday, the students’ organisation that is coordinating the protests against the new citizenship law in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), released a video that shows police personnel beating students with batons and lathis inside the university’s library. In the first segment, Aranya Shankar and Somya Lakhani talk about the questions that the video raises and how it goes against what the Delhi police had earlier claimed.

Next, Tora Agarwala talks about the children whose parents made it to the final NRC list in Assam, but they haven’t. She details the kind of trauma that they are suffering due to it and how the system is ill-equipped to deal with this situation (10:22).

And in the end, Arun Janardhanan, details the case of the 24 year Dalit youth in Tamil Nadu who was lynched when he squatted by the road to defecate (20:08).
