MQM chief Altaf Hussain made a rare public appearance on Friday to celebrate the party’s 32nd foundation anniversary at his London office. Altaf, in a video posted on Facebook by a party supporter, can be seen enthusiastically shaking his fists in a mild celebratory dance as supporters chanted in the background. His sudden reappearance has put to rest rumours surrounding his health that suggested he was bedridden and unable to walk.
News of his return comes in the midst of a breakaway faction led by former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal seeking to establish a stronghold in Karachi. Altaf has been living under a self-imposed exile in United Kingdom since 1992 after an arrest warrant was issued against him in a murder case in Pakistan. His party represents the Muhajir community, who moved from India to Pakistan post partition in 1947.
