UN Summit: China-Pakistan economic corridor an ‘inspiring model, says Nawaz Sharif

Addressing a high-level roundtable on South-South Cooperation jointly hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he said the economic corridor is an inspiring model of South-South cooperation.

“It will bring huge economic and development benefits not just to our two countries but the entire region and beyond,” he said, adding that the project forms an important component of Xi’s “One-belt One-road initiative.”

“This development strategy and framework offers new opportunity for Asia’s transformation and prosperity,” he said.

He added that Pakistan is “actively engaged” with regional organisations including SAARC based on its vision to strengthen regional and economic integration.

The China-Pakistan economic corridor is an ambitious USD 46 billion investment plan linking western China to the Arabian Sea with infrastructure, energy and transport projects.

India has objected to the corridor as it goes through the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
