United States President Barack Obama might be going out of office come November, but the world is going to remember him for a number of reasons. Adding another feather to his cap, a newly retired biology professor from Saint Mary’s College, Indiana, US has named a parasite after him.
Baracktrema obamai, a two-inch long parasite which lives in turtle blood has been named after the US president in a fresh study. Professor Thomas Patt, the man behind this idea, says that it is not an insult to Obama, but an honour.
Platt says this one reminds him of the president: “It’s long. It’s thin. And it’s cool as hell.” Baracktrema obamai “are phenomenally incredibly resilient organisms. I hold them in awe and with phenomenal respect,” Platt told Associated Press.
According to reports, Patt has discovered more than 30 species and named them after other people including his father-in-law. He also said that people pay thousands of dollars for a species to be named after them.
News agency Associated Press reports that President Obama already has a spider, a fish and even an extinct lizard named after him.
