In an explosion that occurred late on Sunday, 1 person was killed and 12 others were injured in Ansbach, near the German city of Nuremberg, a police spokesman said. The spokesman had no immediate information on the cause of the blast, which was first reported at 10:12 pm. CET (2012 GMT), he said. The Nuernberger Nachrichten newspaper reported that the blast occurred at a restaurant in Ansbach.

Germany’s NTV television reported that officials suspected the explosion was caused by a gas leak. It said a nearby music festival had been canceled for the evening. According to the Nordbayern.de news website, the mayor of Ansbach told reporters that the explosion was caused by an explosive device.

Mayor Carda Seidel was quoted by Munich’s Focus magazine as saying that the explosion late Sunday night was near the entrance to an open-air music festival. A spokesman for the Bavarian Interior Ministry said the explosion was not an accident and appears to have been intentional. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann was en route to the site, the spokesman said.

The Bavarian Interior Ministry told DPA that it appeared to possibly be a bombing attack, saying that there was evidence that there was a “deliberate explosion.” According to AP, the police are saying that the one person who has been killed is likely to be culprit behind the explosion. They said that “a man, according to our current knowledge the perpetrator, died” in the blast.
