Two tourists were killed and 15 others injured in southwest China after a tree fell on them at a World Heritage site during a rare windstorm, officials said.

Sudden windstorms hit the town destroying trees, damaging wooden walkways and displacing rocks in Jiuzhaigou Valley of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou Valley scenic area administration said.

“We have never seen such harsh weather before,” Yang Fuying, an official with the administration as was quoted as saying by state-run Xinhua news agency.

The injured are being treated at a local hospital. Repair work on the damaged walkways has begun.

The scenic area was open as usual today and a health aid and safety inspection have been launched, the report said.
