Pakistani philanthropist and humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away on Saturday after prolonged illness.
Edhi had done extensive work in the field of social service including formation of the Edhi village 25 years ago. The village served as a home to the homeless, destitute, street children, elderly, abandoned babies and addicts.
Edhi was also the Chairman of the Edhi foundation which was celebrated for its humanitarian work.
As the news of his death reached the masses, people took to Twitter to mourn Edhi’s demise. Soon #Edhi started trending on the micro-blogging platform.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced a “state funeral” for Edhi and also declared Pakistan’s “highest civilian award” for the deceased humanitarian.
