FBI Director Kash Patel was put in an awkward situation as he faced a relentless attack by Democrats in the House Judiciary Committee, who quizzed him over the agency’s investigation into the sex trafficking allegations against Jeffrey Epstein.
Patel on Wednesday told Jared Moskowitz, the Democrat Congressman from Florida, that he will investigate the alleged birthday card to US President Donald Trump sent to Epstein in 2003.
Ever since The Wall Street Journal first published a report in July, claiming that a birthday card sent by Trump to Epstein in 2003 was part of a larger album compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell for his 50th birthday, the US President and the White House had vehemently denied its existence, repeatedly calling it a Democrat hoax.
However, last week, a House committee released the image of the birthday card, which contains a suggestive drawing and cryptic message. The book was submitted by Epstein’s estate to Congress after the estate received a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee.
The alleged birthday card was signed by Trump, but the US President and the White House have denied that it was his signature.
On Wednesday, Congressman Moskowitz asked Patel if he would be opening an investigation into the Epstein estate for putting out a fake document with the president’s signature.
When Patel asked on what basis he should open an investigation, Moskowitz said, “On what basis? They literally put out a fake document, according to the president, with a fake signature. It’s a forgery of the president of the United States’ signature. That’s the basis.”
The FBI Director then responded by saying, “Sure, I’ll do it.”
It was not immediately clear whether the FBI would formally open an investigation or what such a probe would involve.
Epstein and Trump dominated the House Oversight Committee hearing of Patel on Wednesday as the FBI director was bombarded with questions by Democrats.
When Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, questioned Patel’s comments to the Senate that there is no “credible information” that Epstein trafficked victims to anyone but himself, Democrat Pramila Jayapal joined in, asking the FBI director if he believes Epstein’s victims are credible.
Patel, who did not answer the question directly, said he would welcome new information on the case.
“We have routinely asked for people to come forward with more evidence, and we will look at it,” he said.
