(AP Photo)US President Donald Trump led White House launched its official TikTok account on Tuesday, in order to take advantage of the short video app’s reach to spread the message of the US president as TikTok currently has about 170 million US users.
It’s been reported that Trump has had a soft corner for the popular short video app, which the US president credited for helping him garner support and build a base in young voters when he defeated Democratic candidate and former Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election.
However, lawmakers in Washington are worried that the data of its US users could be accessed by the Chinese government, threatening a major data breach. The Trump administration has been working to strike a deal with US investors and buyout the app from TikTok’s Chinese parent, ByteDance.

The intelligence assessments made by the US agencies in the past have said that TikTok’s owners are beholden to the Chinese government and that the short video app could be used to influence the American citizens.
The new account, @whitehouse, went live on Tuesday evening with a video showing footage of Trump as he declares: “I am your voice.” “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” the caption read.
Trump used the TikTok account with handle @realdonaldtrump for his campaign during the 2024 US presidential election and the account has over 15 million followers. However, the Republican president relies on his social media platform Truth Social to deliver his messages and make announcements, while he posts occasionally on Elon Musk-owned X.
“The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
“President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we’re excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before,” Leavitt added.
A 2024 law necessitated TikTok to stop operating by January 19, 2025 unless its parent company ByteDance divested the app’s US assets or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale.
However, Trump opted not to enforce the law after he began his second term as president on January 20. The US president first extended the deadline to April, then to June 19 and then again to September 17.
