A strong earthquake offshore Taiwan with a magnitude of 7.2 rocked Taipei, the capital, on Wednesday morning, leading to a tsunami warning for the islands of southern Japan and the Philippines, news agency Reuters reported.

According to footage from Taiwan television stations, some buildings collapsed in Hualien, near the quake’s epicentre. It could be felt in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in China’s Fujian province, as well as Shanghai, the report stated.

The earthquake knocked out power in several parts of Taipei, and caused a landslide, according to some videos circulating over social media.

A five-story building in lightly populated Hualien appeared heavily damaged, collapsing its first floor and leaving the rest leaning at a 45-degree angle. In the capital, Taipei, tiles fell from older buildings and within some newer office complexes, news agency PTI reported.
