Speaking at an event in Dublin, Zelenskyy said he was concerned about wavering support from Kyiv’s allies. “Yes, I am afraid,” he said when asked about the possibility of the US stepping back. “If somebody from our allies is tired, I’m afraid.”
He added: “It’s the goal of Russia to withdraw the interest of America from this situation.”
Earlier, Zelenskyy said he felt a small sense of optimism about peace efforts because negotiations had moved more quickly and the United States remained involved, Reuters reported.
“A little bit optimism was in my words because of some speed of negotiations, and from the American side, their interest in it. It showed that America is not withdrawing now from any kind of diplomatic way of dialogue and it is good,” he said.
US envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner are in Moscow for discussions on a possible peace plan, according to Reuters. European governments have been pushing for an agreement that protects Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The talks come amid competing claims over the situation on the ground. Russia has said its forces captured the eastern city of Pokrovsk, a claim Ukraine denies, Reuters added.
