US Secret Service shoots armed man near White House, was flagged as potential ‘suicide risk’

An armed man was shot by US Secret Service officers near the White House early Sunday morning following a confrontation, the agency confirmed as per Voice of America reported. The suspect, who reportedly travelled from Indiana, had been flagged by local police as a potential suicide risk prior to the incident.
According to the Secret Service, officers located the man’s parked vehicle around midnight and identified him nearby. When officers approached, the man allegedly brandished a firearm, prompting an armed confrontation during which the Secret Service personnel fired shots.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, and his condition remains unknown. No Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
At the time of the shooting, US President Donald Trump was at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The Secret Service has not indicated any direct threat to the White House, as per Voice of America.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team is conducting an inquiry into the shooting, as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in Washington, DC.
Further details, including the suspect’s identity and motive, have not yet been disclosed.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
