US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse was stolen on Sunday night while she was dining at a restaurant in downtown Washington, DC, two law enforcement sources confirmed to CNBC. The theft occurred in a public setting and involved the loss of not just personal items, but also sensitive documents and access materials belonging to the high-ranking federal official.
According to a DHS spokesperson, the purse contained roughly $3,000 in cash. Noem had reportedly withdrawn the amount to treat her family to dinner and various Easter-related activities and gifts. “Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren,” the official explained. “She was using the cash withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts.”
In addition to the cash, the purse contained several other important belongings, including her passport, makeup bag, blank checks, driver’s license, apartment key, keys, medication, and her DHS access card, according to reports by CNN and ABC News.
CNN reported that the US Secret Service had reviewed security footage showing an unidentified white male, wearing a medical mask, walking past Secretary Noem’s table and snatching the bag. While the identity of the suspect has not been revealed, the footage has become a central piece in the ongoing investigation.
The Secret Service is actively looking into the theft, a spokesperson told CNBC, but declined to provide additional details, instead deferring comment to the Department of Homeland Security. The agency continues to gather information surrounding the incident and has not yet announced any leads or suspects publicly.
When asked about the theft, Noem stated that the situation is “not resolved yet.”
She also mentioned in an interview with NBC News that the Secret Service is aware of what happened but she had not yet spoken to them directly about it.
