UN chief calls for immediate de-escalation of US-Venezuela tensions

Venezuela complained to the United Nations Security Council over the US seizure of an oil tanker calling it "state-sponsored piracy" and the "illegitimate use of military force against a private vessel."

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for restraint and the immediate de-escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela, his spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Guterres calls on both countries to “honor their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter and any other applicable legal framework to safeguard peace in the region”, Deputy UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters.
