Liverpool crash: UK police charge man with seven offences, court date set

He was arrested on Monday and will appear before Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday.

British police Thursday charged 53-year-old Paul Desmond Sanders Doyle after a car ploughed into a crowd during a victory parade celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League win earlier this week.

Doyle, who is from the West Derby area of the city, faces seven charges, including one count of dangerous driving and six counts related to grievous bodily harm with intent. He was arrested on Monday and is set to appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The incident occurred in Liverpool’s packed city centre, where around a million people had gathered to celebrate the club’s triumph. Video footage captured a grey Ford Galaxy colliding with the crowd, throwing some people into the air and dragging others under its wheels. A total of 79 people were injured in the crash, with seven still in hospital in stable condition.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that the crash was not an act of terrorism but described it as an isolated incident. Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire, Sarah Hammond, said criminal proceedings are now active and that Doyle is entitled to a fair trial.

“I fully understand how this incident has left us all shocked and saddened, and I know many will continue to have concerns and questions,” Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims told reporters. “Our detectives are working tirelessly … to seek the answers to all those questions.”
