Trump-backed Florida Republican Fine defeats Democrat Weil in US House special election

The competitive election, held after Michael Waltz vacated the seat to become US President Donald Trump’s NSA, dashed the hopes of Democratic Party.

Republican State Senator Randy Fine has won the special election in Florida’s 6th Congressional District against Democrat Josh Weil, a seat which was earlier represented by National Security Advisor Michael Waltz.

The competitive election, held after Waltz vacated the seat to become US President Donald Trump’s NSA, dashed the hopes of Democratic Party.

However, the narrow margin of Republican Fine’s victory would keep the party uneasy about the 2026 national mid-term congressional elections.

Trump endorsed Republican Fine in the election in Florida, a district which the US president carried by 30 points in last November election, while Waltz easily won the re-election bid.

The 6th District election in Florida and state Supreme Court election in Wisconsin are the first set of polls which have taken place since Trump took oath of office in January and returned to the White House.

The election in Florida came under the national spotlight after Democratic candidate Josh Weil raised more than $12 million in donations during this campaign, while Republican Fine was able to collect roughly $1 million. This difference and the polls showing the contest in the margin of error made the election intriguing.

All this prompted the Republican party to throw a national campaign backing Fine, including telephone town halls by Trump and other party leaders showing support for Fine.

It benefitted for Fine as Republican turnout climbed in the final days of early voting and in-person ballots cast by Republicans were over and above the expectations of the party.

However, Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives but by only a narrow majority, though it would be sufficient until next year’s mid term election.
