US President Donald Trump has described Chicago as the “murder capital of the world” after police reported more than 50 people were shot during the Labour Day weekend.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump said: “At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, eight people were killed. The last two weekends were similar. Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the world, by far.”

He added, “Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Police said the shootings took place in at least 32 separate incidents between Friday and Monday.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said he welcomed support from civilian law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and ATF but rejected the idea of military involvement. “Sending troops to an American city is an illegal invasion,” he said, adding he was prepared to challenge such a move in court.

Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson has also signed an order barring local police from working jointly with federal agents on patrols or arrests.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was right about Chicago’s crime crisis.

“JB Pritzker should do something radical! He should pick up the phone and call the president because the ‘nothing to see here’ move isn’t working,” Leavitt wrote on X alongside a video from MSNBC.
