Trump to appoint Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy, confirms VP-elect JD Vance

Miller previously served as a senior policy adviser during Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency and was instrumental in advancing restrictive immigration measures, including the construction of the US-Mexico border wall.

The US President-elect Donald Trump is due to appoint immigration adviser Stephen Miller as White House deputy chief of staff for policy, according to media reports. This would place Miller, the architect of Trump’s hardline immigration policies during his first term, in a significant role.

Miller previously served as a senior policy adviser during Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency and was instrumental in advancing restrictive immigration measures, including the construction of the US-Mexico border wall, a travel ban targeting certain Muslim-majority countries, and the widely criticised 2018 family separation policy at the border.

Vice President-elect JD Vance appeared to confirm the selection on X, writing, “This is another fantastic pick by the president. Congrats @StephenM!”

Trump, recently elected for a second term, has pledged an aggressive immigration crackdown, including large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants, a move that has sparked criticism over its potential humanitarian, financial, and logistical challenges.

Trump has also revealed plans to appoint Tom Homan, former acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as his “border czar” once he takes office on January 20.
