TikTok’s Chief Executive Officer, Shou Zi Chew, has reportedly sought advice on US-related matters from Elon Musk, a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
Citing sources familiar with the discussions, the report stated that Chew recently initiated conversations with the Tesla CEO, asking for his views on topics ranging from the incoming administration to potential tech policies. Neither Musk, TikTok, ByteDance, nor the Trump administration have responded to requests for comment from news agency Reuters.
The WSJ report also noted that while the two executives have not discussed specific strategies to ensure TikTok’s continued operations in the United States, Chew has kept ByteDance’s senior leadership updated on the talks. Company executives reportedly remain cautiously optimistic about resolving the ongoing issues.
Before the US election, ByteDance executives were preparing for any outcome, meeting with individuals connected to both President Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the report added. Trump, who unsuccessfully attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, has stated that if re-elected in November, he would not allow the platform to be barred.
