Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned that Beijing will retaliate against what he called the United States’ “arbitrary tariffs,” accusing Washington of responding to goodwill with hostility.

Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of China’s annual parliamentary session on Friday, Wang criticised the US approach, particularly in relation to efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis.

“China has been actively cooperating with the US to help contain the fentanyl crisis, but in return, we are met with punitive tariffs,” Wang said, according to a report by Associated Press (AP).

He further warned that Washington cannot expect to suppress China while maintaining stable ties.

“No country should fantasize that it can suppress China and maintain a good relationship with China at the same time,” Wang said. “Such two-faced acts are not good for the stability of bilateral relations or for building mutual trust”, as reported by AP.
