Gunshots were fired in the northern German city of Stade on Monday, and five people have been reported dead in the shootout, police said.

Police said a “major operation” was underway in the area, while the motive behind the incident remains under investigation, Reuters reported. Stade police added that several others have been injured in the shooting.

A BBC report, quoting a police spokesperson, stated that two people have been arrested and one of them is a male suspect.

The mass shootout took place in a youth centre in ⁠central ‌Stade, a town that has a population of around 50,000 and is located west of Hamburg, local media reported.
