Why are Ukraine and Russia not able to agree on the fate of Donetsk?

A top aide to Vladimir Putin said on Friday after talks between the Russian president and U.S. envoys that there was no hope of sealing a deal to end the war in Ukraine unless disagreements over territory were resolved.

What is the main sticking point?

The two sides cannot agree on the future of the Donetsk region, one of two regions which comprise Donbas. Russian forces already control nearly all of Luhansk, the other region.
