A top police official in Bangladesh on Wednesday attributed the recent casualties among policemen to some unprofessional and overly ambitious officials who violated human rights.

Newly-appointed Inspector General of Police Md Mainul Islam addressed the issue at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters, stating that “some unprofessional officers did not follow the accepted principles of applying force and violated human rights.” He added, “It is because of them [unprofessional officials] that this ongoing violence and casualties have occurred,” as reported by The Daily Star newspaper.

Islam noted that many police officials have been injured, killed, and tortured due to the actions of these officials. He assured that every murder would be properly investigated, stating, “Action will be taken against those involved as per police regulations.”

The IGP apologised, acknowledging that the police could not meet expectations during the students’ movement against discrimination. “At this juncture, I sincerely call upon all the police members to dedicate themselves to discharging respective duties as members of the forces, for the needs of the country and the nation,” Islam said.

He directed all police personnel across the country to return to their respective police lines, offices, public order management, and barracks. “The metropolitan police commissioner and the superintendent of police of the districts will form citizen security committees with senior citizens, professionals, student representatives, political and media persons in the police stations of their respective jurisdictions,” he explained. “We are urging the public that the committee will play an emergency role in ensuring the security of police stations and police station areas for now, and its final outline will be formulated later.”

Islam also instructed his colleagues to avoid making any demands, comments, or replies on social media through personal accounts or association accounts.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Army has requested people to contact the nearest army camp if they face sabotage, violence, or death threats. The Inter-Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) stated that the army remains deployed to ensure public safety, property protection, and the security of important government installations. The ISPR urged the public to avoid misleading the army with false information and rumours, and provided contact numbers for reporting issues.
