On the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19, Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance to thank US President Joe Biden for his lifetime of service. Amid enthusiastic cheers and applause from Democrat supporters and party members, she called the convention a tribute to the departing president. Biden, in July this year, decided not to run for re-election and quit the race for the US presidency, endorsing Vice President Harris as the face of Democrats in the race.
