Senegal President Macky Sall deplored a “lack of dialogue” as mediators entered a second day of talks over the coup in Burkina Faso in which an elite military unit overthrew the transitional government.

Sall, chairman of the regional ECOWAS body, was due to meet Saturday morning with members of former President Blaise Compaore’s party. Compaore was ousted in an uprising last October. Transitional leaders were supposed to steer Burkina Faso to elections next month, but that process was derailed when Gen. Gilbert Diendere seized power Thursday.

Late Friday night, after a full day of meetings in Ouagadougou, Sall called for “a dynamic of reconciliation.” Transition officials have insisted the junta must be removed.

Diendere, a former top aide to Compaore, has said he is not in touch with the ex-president.
