In the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, the voters chose Susan Crawford over Brad Schimel of Waukesha County, in a major setback to US President Donald Trump and his advisor billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk who reportedly spent $25 million for Schimel’s campaign.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court election results, which is being seen as an early referendum on Trump’s presidency, saw Democratic backed candidate Judge Crawford, who serves in Dane County win, and maintain the court’s 4-3 liberal majority.

As per reports, the Wisconsin Supreme Court election has become the most expensive judicial contest in US history with candidates, the state parties and outside groups spending close to $90 million, including Musk’s $25 million.

The New York Times reported that 60% of the votes had been counted on Tuesday evening and Judge Crawford held a double-digit lead.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court had a 4-3 liberal edge but with one liberal judge retiring, an election was called. Liberal Susan Crawford and conservative Brad Schimel, a former Republican state attorney general, were in a prestige contest due to their respective backings.

However, the Wisconsin election race was technically non-partisan but Trump had endorsed Schimel. The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decisions in the proceedings ahead could have an impact on abortion rights, labor rights, and election rules.

Musk’s over the top support for conservative Schimel was reportedly due to his electric car company Tesla, sued in Wisconsin this year, while challenging a state law banning carmakers from owning dealerships. The case could eventually land in the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
