Italy Coronavirus (Covid-19) Tracker: Italy has been one of the worst-hit countries by the novel coronavirus, which has infected nearly 3.94 million people across the world and killed over 2,75,000.

As many as 99,023 people have recovered from the infection in Italy. As of May 9, there are around 87,961 active cases, out of which 98 per cent (86,793) have mild conditions and 2 per cent (1,168) are serious or critical.

The Italian government cautiously eased a few restrictions on May 4, while keeping many others in place, Reuters reported. Most shops stay shut until May 18, and schools, cinemas and theaters remain closed indefinitely. The country plans to reopen the economy without triggering a new wave of coronavirus infections. “We expect a very complex challenge,” Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said as he outlined the road map to restarting activities put into hibernation since early March.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Italy reports fall in active cases

Italy recorded the first fall in active cases on April 21, with the number of new coronavirus cases dropping to 2,256, the lowest level in over a month, while 454 deaths were recorded, Reuters reported. There were 2,573 people in intensive care on April 21 as against 2,635 on April 20.

Italy, with a population of 60 million people, imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 9. On March 20, Italy overtook China in terms of the overall death toll, reporting 3,405 deaths. The highest number of deaths, 919, were reported in Italy on March 27.

The coronavirus outbreak began in Italy on January 31 when two Chinese tourists in Rome tested positive for the virus. A few weeks later, a cluster of cases was detected in Lombardy on February 21.

Lombardy in Northern Italy has been the worst-affected by the infection, reporting as many as 80,723 cases of coronavirus. Piedmont has the second-highest number of cases at 28,368, followed by Emilia-Romagna with 26,598 cases. Veneto has at least 18,618 cases of coronavirus, Tuscany has 9,721 cases, Liguria has 8,723 cases, Lazio has around 7,086 cases, Marche has 6,470 cases. Campania has 4,380 COVID-19 cases, Autonomous Province of Trento has nearly 4,285 cases, Apulia has 4,256 cases of coronavirus, Sicily has around 3,301 cases, Friuli-Venezia Guilia has 3,116 cases.

Abruzzo has reported around 3,078 coronavirus cases, Autonomous Province of Bolzano has 2,558 cases, Umbria has 1,406 cases, Sardinia has 1,330 cases. Aosta Valley has 1,151 COVID-19 cases, Calabria has 1,126, Basilicata has 382 and Molise has 327 cases of coronavirus.
