Earlier in the day, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun (left) thanked Donald Trump (centre) for his efforts towards a truce with Israel led by Benjamin Netanyahu (right). (Express photo) Iran-US-Israel War Today News Highlights: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Lebanon and Israel have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire. He added that the two countries met in Washington and agreed to achieve peace.
The ground situation: The Middle East stands at a critical crossroads on April 16, 2026, as the US ramps up military and economic pressure on Tehran, while a flurry of diplomatic activity unfolds in neutral capitals. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a warning to the Iranian leadership on Thursday, claiming the US has established total maritime dominance and is monitoring every movement of Iran’s remaining military assets. “We are watching you,” Hegseth said, asserting that the Iranian Navy has been effectively neutralised and the Strait of Hormuz is now under US control.
In another development, Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is in Tehran today for high-level talks with Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, just as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Qatar to coordinate a regional push for de-escalation. These efforts aim to secure a “Grand Bargain”, a sweeping deal that Vice President JD Vance suggested could resolve the nuclear deadlock, though a significant gap remains between Washington’s demand for a 20-year nuclear moratorium and Tehran’s 5-year offer.
How closely are you following the Iran war?
US-Iran war ceasefire: Here are 5 latest developments
- Naval blockade: CENTCOM reports that 90% of Iran’s sea trade has been “completely halted” within 48 hours of the blockade’s commencement.
- Hegseth’s briefing: The Defence Secretary claimed the US is using less than 10% of its naval power to enforce the blockade and warned that any movement of Iranian assets is being tracked for potential strikes on “dual-use infrastructure.”
- Israel-Lebanon breakthrough: President Donald Trump announced that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon are set to speak directly for the first time in over 30 years, despite confusion from Lebanese officials regarding the official channels.
- Humanitarian toll: In southern Lebanon, four medics were killed in consecutive Israeli strikes near Nabatiyeh, an incident Lebanon has labelled a “war crime.” Meanwhile, Tehran officials report the war’s death toll has reached approximately 5,000.
- Market reaction: Global stocks have ticked upward on hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough, even as oil prices remain volatile near $96 per barrel.
A 10-day truce began in Lebanon on Friday that could pause fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group and boost attempts to extend the ceasefire between Iran, the United States and Israel after weeks of devastating war.
US President Donald Trump announced the agreement as a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. However, Israel has not been fighting with Lebanon itself, but rather with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants inside the country, who were not formally part of the agreement.
South Korea’s Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol has announced that his government will “proactively” respond to the impact on livelihoods and supply chains due to the US-Israel war on Iran, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports.
“Until the end of the war becomes clear, we will firmly maintain an emergency economic response system and actively address supply chain issues and difficulties in people’s livelihoods,” he said.
According to the Yonhap report, Koo directed relevant ministries to expedite the distribution of a recently approved emergency budget for the Middle East crisis, whose centrepiece is a 6.1 trillion won ($4.12bn) cash aid initiative, aimed at providing financial relief to the bottom 70 percent of income earners struggling with surging fuel costs.
The United States has informed some European countries that previously contracted weapons deliveries are likely to be delayed as the Iran war continues to draw on US weapons stocks, five sources familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency.
Reuters quoted the sources saying that several European countries will be affected, including in the Baltic region and Scandinavia.
Some of the weapons in question were purchased by European countries under the Foreign Military Sales programme, or FMS, but have not yet been delivered, the sources told the news agency.
Reuters noted that the delays underline the degree to which the war against Iran has begun to stretch US supplies of some critical weaponry and ammunition.
Trump touched on Iran during comments in Las Vegas focused on taxes and said that the war is going along “swimmingly.”
“We can do whatever we want and it should be ending pretty soon,” he said.
The Lebanese armed group claims its fighters have carried out 56 military operations over the past 24 hours, targeting various Israeli settlements, troop concentrations, military vehicles and close-range clashes along Lebanon’s southern border and in northern Israel.
The US military has widened its efforts beyond the blockade of Iran's ports to allow its forces around the world to stop any ship tied to Tehran or those suspected of carrying supplies that could help its government, from weapons to oil, metals and electronics.
Gen Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, specifically pointed to operations in the Pacific, saying the US would be targeting vessels that left before the blockade began earlier this week outside the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for energy and other shipments.
US forces in other areas of responsibility "will actively pursue any Iranian-flagged vessel or any vessel attempting to provide material support to Iran," he told reporters at the Pentagon.
The 10-day halt to the fighting that will begin later Thursday can be extended if there’s progress in talks to reach a lasting peace agreement and Lebanon “effectively demonstrates its ability to assert its sovereignty,” the State Department said.
President Donald Trump announced the truce following talks held in Washington this week. Israel hasn’t been fighting with Lebanon itself but rather with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group inside Lebanon.
In the statement that the U.S. says was agreed to by Lebanon and Israel, there is a provision to allow Israel to defend itself “at any time, against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks.” Hezbollah has said it will respond to any strikes by Israel.
But otherwise, Israel “will not carry out any offensive military operations against Lebanese targets, including civilian, military, and other state targets,” the statement says.

Israel’s rescue services Magen David Adom said a 25-year-old man was seriously wounded in the Karmiel area, likely by interceptor debris, following sirens in northern Israel.
The military said it is preparing for the possibility of fire from Lebanon, warning of potentially more intense attacks in northern Israel ahead of an expected ceasefire.
AP
The 14-day ceasefire is set to expire April 22, but Trump said it’s possible that the deadline to make a deal could be pushed out further.
“If we’re close to a deal would I extend?” Trump said in an exchange with reporters. “Yeah, I would do that”

The U.S. naval blockade of Iran is just an example of "polite" behavior during the ongoing ceasefire and U.S. forces are ready to strike Iran's power plants and energy industry if ordered, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on Thursday.
Standing alongside two of the U.S. military's most senior officers, Hegseth said Iran needs to choose wisely as it prepares for negotiations with the United States.

Israel minister, Israel Katz, warned Tehran it could opt “between a bridge to the future and an abyss of isolation and destruction.”
If Iran chooses the latter, it will “quickly discover that the targets we have not yet struck until now are even more painful than what we have already struck.”
Katz sought to frame Israel’s campaign against the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon as part of a wider confrontation with Iran.

Europe has "maybe 6 weeks or so (of) jet fuel left," the head of the International Energy Agency said Thursday in a wide-ranging Associated Press interview, warning of possible flight cancellations "soon" if oil supplies remain blocked by the Iran war.
International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol painted a sobering picture of the global repercussions of what he called "the largest energy crisis we have ever faced," stemming from the pinch-off of oil, gas and other vital supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
"In the past there was a group called Dire Straits.' It's a dire strait now, and it is going to have major implications for the global economy. And the longer it goes, the worse it will be for the economic growth and inflation around the world," he said. — AP

Mediators moved closer Wednesday to extending the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and restarting negotiations to salvage the fragile truce before it expires next week.
A senior Iranian military official threatened to halt trade in the region if the US does not lift its naval blockade, underscoring tensions that are overshadowing the diplomacy.

The leader of Iran’s joint military command threatened Wednesday to halt trade in the Gulf region if the U.S. does not lift its blockade of Iranian ports.

“We are subject to the decisions of the relevant officials, but personally I do not agree to extend the ceasefire,” said Mohsen Rezaei, formerly a commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps who now advises Mojtaba Khamenei on military affairs, Iranian state media reported.
Rezaei also urged officials to be more cautious than they had been before in negotiations over economic matters with the U.S.
He said Iran was setting the preconditions in the next round of talks, not the U.S.
“Unlike the Americans who are afraid of continuous war, we are fully prepared and familiar with a long war,” he said, according to the report.
AP
That’s according to Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, who says: “U.S. forces have completely halted economic trade going in and out of Iran by sea.”
The command said Wednesday that no vessels have made it past its forces during the blockade’s first 48 hours. The blockade began Monday.
Central Command noted that 10 vessels have complied with directions to turn around and return toward an Iranian port or Iran’s coastal area.
The blockade is being enforced “impartially against all vessels of all nations entering or leaving coastal areas or ports in Iran,” the Command said. Vessels avoiding Iranian ports are not affected.
The action could put serious pressure on the Iranian economy, while Tehran’s earlier cutoff of the waterway crucial to oil and gas supplies has sent energy prices higher.

The U.S. stock market hit a record Wednesday after adding to its two-week rally built on hopes the war won’t create a worst-case scenario for the global economy.
The S&P 500 rose 0.8% and eclipsed its prior all-time high set in January. After falling nearly 10% below its record in late March, the index at the heart of many 401(k) accounts has since roared more than 10% higher.
Much of the rally was due to expectations for calming tensions in the war and a resumption of the full flow of oil from the Persian Gulf. Hopes remained high as regional officials told The Associated Press that the U.S. and Iran had an “in principle agreement” to extend a ceasefire to allow for more diplomacy.

Iran-US-Israel War News Live: The Pentagon is deploying thousands of additional troops to the Middle East in the coming days as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on Iran for a possible deal to end the weeks-long conflict, according to The Washington Post.
US officials said the military buildup also keeps options open for fresh strikes or even ground operations if a fragile ceasefire collapses.
The reinforcements include around 6,000 troops aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its accompanying warships. Another 4,200 personnel from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, along with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are expected to reach the region by month-end, the report said.
