Iran has granted temporary release to Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced the news on social media platform X, stating the release was based on medical advice.

“Following the recommendation of the examining doctor, the public prosecutor has suspended Narges Mohammadi’s prison sentence for three weeks, and she has been released,” Nili wrote.

However, her family and supporters have criticised the temporary release as insufficient. In a statement, they described the three-week suspension as “inadequate” and called for her immediate and unconditional release.

“A 21-day suspension of Narges Mohammadi’s sentence is inadequate. We demand her unconditional release or at least an extension of her leave to three months,” the statement read, labelling the measure as “too little, too late”.

Mohammadi, a prominent advocate for the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, has been serving her sentence for campaigning against capital punishment and mandatory hijab laws in Iran. Her imprisonment was extended by an additional 15 months shortly after she was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Iranian authorities accused her of spreading propaganda against the state while in custody.

Despite the ongoing crackdown, Mohammadi has continued her activism from behind bars. Earlier this year, she was denied permission to attend her father’s funeral or offer condolences to her family.

Her children accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf at the ceremony in Oslo.
