Gaza based militant group Hamas has claimed that it fired a barrage of rockets at Israel for the first time since the ceasefire agreement collapsed between the two warring parties, as the death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza mounted to 85, Palestinian health authorities said.

According to the Israeli military, three projectiles were fired by Hamas towards central Israel. The military added that one of the rockets was intercepted, while the two others “fell into an open area,” with no casualties reported.

The Israeli military said, “The IAF successfully intercepted one projectile and two additional projectiles fell in an open area,” as quoted by Reuters.

Hamas’ armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed it had launched strikes against Israel and said it was in response to “the Zionist massacres against civilians”.

Al-Qassam Brigades said it “bombed the city of Tel Aviv deep inside the occupied territories with a barrage of M90 rockets.”

The retaliatory strikes by Hamas is the first since the ceasefire agreement took place with Israel on January 19. Israel started striking Gaza on Tuesday which shattered the expectations of truce to continue for the second stage.

According to Palestinian authorities, at least 85 people have been killed and dozens wounded in Israeli strikes which started on Tuesday, shattering the ceasefire proposals.

Israel’s military launched a new ground campaign in central Gaza and on Thursday, it informed that it had begun conducting ground operations in the north of the enclave.
