A car plowed into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim on Monday, leaving two people dead and multiple others injured, according to local police.
Police detained the car’s driver, later confirming he acted alone and posed no broader threat to the public. According to broadcaster SWR, the suspect is a 40-year-old German man from Rhineland-Palatinate, as stated by Baden-Württemberg’s interior minister, Thomas Strobl.
The incident occurred as crowds gathered across the Rhineland region for carnival celebrations.
Local media reported that the vehicle – a black SUV was traveling at high speed from Paradeplatz square toward the city’s landmark water tower when it struck the group.
Details about the suspect, the motive behind the attack, and the number of injured victims have not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, residents were advised to remain indoors as law enforcement secured the scene.
Local media outlets Die Rheinpfalz and Mannheimer Morgen report a significant police presence on the ground.

According to reports, German police had already been on high alert for this year’s carnival parades after social media accounts linked to the Islamic State militant group called for attacks on events in Cologne and Nuremberg.
While there has been no confirmation that the Mannheim incident was a deliberate attack, concerns are rising following recent incidents of vehicles being used to target crowds.
In February, an Afghan man drove a car into a group of demonstrators in Munich, killing two people. In December, six people were killed in Magdeburg after a Saudi-born man plowed into the crowds at a Christmas market.
